Blanket test failings highlight home dangers
ALMOST half of the electric blankets tested in the Wealden district this month failed a safety check.
Free testing sessions, organised by Wealden District Council, took place at 10 venues across the region, including Polegate, Pevensey Bay, Hailsham, East Dean and Alfriston.
Of the 278 blankets tested, 122 were found to be unsafe - a failure rate of 44 per cent. The faulty blankets were destroyed and discount vouchers given for replacement blankets.
Councillor Ron Cussons, cabinet member for community, said, "After a few years of regular use, materials get frayed, connections become lose and wiring exposed.
"Other signs to watch out for are fabric scorch marks and controls that make a buzzing noise or give off a smell. "Don't take unnecessary chances. If in doubt, contact the manufacturers or get your electric blanket tested by a competent electrician.
"If your blanket is 10 years old, you should consider replacing it with a new one. It is not worth taking chances."
Faulty electric blankets account for more than 5,000 fires in the home each year.
The testing sessions also provided achance to get friendly advice and information on home safety, house adaptations, pensions and benefits, home security and fire prevention.
More than 100 free light bulbs were handed out and more than 30 residents also received help with pensions and benefits.
Project partners included East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Anchor Staying Put, Trading Standards, Sussex Police and the Department for Work and Pensions. The event was funded by the Safer Wealden Partnership.
