HER thoughts on the new seafront shelters on West Parade are well-documented, but Jackie Bialeska is taking no chances with her old favourites on the East side.

She applied for the one near Bexhill Sailing Club to be listed and was thrilled to receive news from English Heritage that her application was successful and the shelter now has grade II listed status.

Jackie commented: “I thought before anyone started knocking it down I would pre-empt them and get it listed. I am highly delighted.”

This was a slow process which started when Jackie wrote to English Heritage to say she would like to have the shelter listed and was asked to send through all the details. “You have to find out the history and send pictures so they can decide whether to do it or not - but it is that simple.”

In the photograph next to Jackie and Councillor Dierdre Williams, who supported the East Parade shelters being protected, is Judy White from News Plus and her dog Frog, who has played a crucial part. Jackie had to step over Frog to reach a postcard with a vintage view of the promenade, taken from a 1908 painting. “That postcard clinched the deal because English Heritage had never seen the three shelters together. They told me the news last Friday, then this week I got all the paperwork confirming it. I am over the moon. This is the beginning of looking after the Eastern seafront so the council cannot come in and pull the shelters down. It would be difficult for the council to have a very modernistic style if we have those shelters there.” Cllr Williams said: “On behalf of my ward, which the shelter is in, a huge vote of thanks should be given to Jackie for her hard work in preserving our heritage.”
