Chance for councillors to question Next Wave

SOME might be resistant to change, but Bexhill is now at the conclusion of its Next Wave journey with a refreshed and rejuvenated seafront.

Some £5.6 million was poured into the Colonnade, Promenade, West Parade and the Metropole Lawn but still the question can be asked - was it worth it?

On Monday evening, Rother councillors will be able to query whatever they like about the spend, the plan, and realisation of Next Wave, when head of service Kim Ross presents an end of project review.

The Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting at the Town Hall from 5.30pm will provide opportunity to discuss how much went where, and to what effect.

This could include the controversial shelters and whether, having cost around £60,000 each, they are considered fit for purpose.

Then there’s the lighting on the Promenade, and the steps adjacent to the Rowing Club, which some residents already claim are not bright enough for safety.

Other sources for debate could be the confusion around the size of the ventilation tower, the loss of the view of the De La Warr Pavilion from the Colonnade, the imminent need for a restaurant/cafe, and who is responsible for putting right the subsidence that rapidly appeared under the freshly laid turf in front of the DLWP.

Otherwise councillors might question issues included in the Next Wave proposal that ended up not happening at all - improvements to the De La Warr Pavilion car park, the Marina Court Avenue development, and a purpose-built kiosk.

The meeting is open to the public which is, however, not allowed to ask questions.

The other major talking point will be possible changes to car parking in Rother District, with new tariffs such as overnight parking, the introduction of charges at the Manor Barn car park, and reduction in free parking days such as Christmas.
