Civil servants go out on strike over redundancy deals
Hundreds of civil servants took strike action across Hastings this week in a disupte over redundancy packages.
Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union joined thousands across the country forming picket lines over Government plans to reduce compensation packages for all civil servants made jobless.
Lines formed outside Hastings Magistrates' Court, Ocean House, the jobcentre in Heron House on London Road, and Ashdown House on Sedlescombe Road North on Monday, with workers vowing to ban overtime when they returned to their desks on Wednesday.
Dee Luxford, of the union's group executive committee, said 63 per cent of their members had voted for the two-day strike, including over 100 from Ocean House, the town's tax office and social care centre.
"We have got members in Hastings who have been here for years and have lost thousands," she said. "We have put up with rubbish pay for years and years. They promised if they had to get rid of us they would compensate us properly. But they are trying to substantially reduce this. We just want them to come back to the table."
