Coastal Currents taking shape

The town's biggest arts festival is taking shape with organisers saying it will be even bigger and better than last year.

Coastal Currents runs from August 28 to September 30 with another jam-packed programme of exhibitions, talks and events showcasing the very best cultural talent from across 1066 Country.

The brochure is released next week, boasting 35 exhibitions, 31 events, 11 trails, nine talks, 11 workshops, 38 artists' open studios and 25 newly commissioned works of art under the Place project.

The theme this year is Tracing Hastings, with a focus on encouraging people to explore the town's history and character, and there will be a number of trails which tie together the festival's locations.

As ever there will be plenty for children as well, with illustrator Catherine Grimaldi designing activity packs for youngsters.

Highlights include the return of the Pier to Eternity night time cycle rides, the return of the mischievous stunts of The Back Door Gallery, a woodland production of As You Like It and the open artists' studios.

"We will be distributing 30,000 brochures next week and it's even bigger than last year," said organiser Lorna Crabbe.

Also returning is the Hastings Film Challenge, where budding Steven Spielbergs have three days to produce a three minute epic based on a title and a genre picked out of a hat.

All the submitted films will be shown at a special screening evening at Venuu in George Street on Friday, September 10, when the coveted Logie awards will be handed out.

Film challenge supremo Phil Smith hopes to top last year's 25 entries, and there will be advice sessions and an edit clinic to help anyone who has the ideas but not the technical know-how to create their masterpiece.

There will be a workshop at the Media Enterprise Centre, Havelock Road, on Saturday August 21, and the challenge itself kicks off a week later.
