College backs Fairtrade with canteen and show

FAIRTRADE campaigners visited Bexhill College to celebrate the use of their products by students and staff.

They were also there to announce the date for the forthcoming Fairtrade fashion show which will be held at the college campus.

The college began selling the Fairtrade range of products more than two years ago to satisfy the growing demand for ethically sourced, quality products.

After a change of catering company running the college refectory, a survey was carried out to find out what food staff and students wanted to see on the menu and Fairtrade food was high on the list.

The commitment to sell Fairtrade products is just one small part of the college's continuing commitment to its equality and diversity policy.

Jack Doherty of the BexhillFairtradeTown Committee said: "BexhillCollegestudentsdemonstratedgoodethical decision-making.

"Consumer powerby the studentsnow means that everycup of tea or coffeeused in the collegecafe, as well as other Fairtrade products, guarantees fairnessand justice for the producers in thedeveloping world.

"It meansalsothatmanychildrenwillhave theopportunity for education and a careerlikethemselves because the extra they receive through Fairtrade is normallyused to build a classroom or a health centre.

"In this way Bexhill College is proving it is integralto Bexhill Fairtrade Town and taking a lead and a responsible role as part of the community. We congratulate Stuart Smith (college catering manager) for magnanimously providing the Fairtrade options requested by staff and students in the survey."

Following on from the success of last year's event, the Fairtrade fashion show is on Friday March 19 at Bexhill College Campus, Penland Road.
