A COURT case against the leader of Rother District Council has been dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Cllr Carl Maynard (pictured), of Baldslow Down, St Leonards-on-Sea, first appeared before Hastings Magistrates Court on October 20, charged with driving an unroadworthy vehicle and having no MOT.

The 40-year-old was stopped by police on the A259 De La Warr Road, Bexhill, on September 1.

It was alleged the suspension on the Rover Metro he was driving had collapsed.

Maynard pleaded not guilty to both charges and was due to stand trial yesterday (Thursday).

However the case has been discontinued after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped both charges against Cllr Maynard.

Since 1999, Cllr Maynard has represented the Brede Valley Ward, which includes Brede, Westfield, Udimore, Broad Oak and Kent Street, on Rother District Council.

He also represents Brede Valley and Marsham on East Sussex County Council, where Cllr Maynard is the lead member for economy, transport and environment.

The county council’s website states Cllr Maynard is responsible for operational services, planning and developmental control, transport strategy and road safety, environmental and waste strategy, trading standards, emergency planning, gypsies and travellers.
