Crime figures for Eastbourne are among country's lowest

EASTBOURNE has some of the lowest crime rates across the country.

A new report says that compared to similar towns, Eastbourne has the lowest crime rate and is below the national average.

The figures are being welcomed as a major success for the Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership, which is made up of local statutory and voluntary agencies.

In a new report, Eastbourne is compared to 14 other similar districts and boroughs nationally across 26 separate crime categories.

In seven of the categories, Eastbourne has the lowest crime rate and is in the lowest 30 per cent in 17 of the categories. The town is below the national average in 25 categories.

Other headlines in the report include that overall crime is down 20 per cent to the end of June 2010, burglary of dwellings is down 30 per cent, violent crime is down 25 per cent, public violent crime is down 32 per cent, criminal damage is down 26 per cent and anti-social behaviour is currently down by 21 per cent.

The reductions, over and above a drop in local crime recorded from 2005 to 2008, follow the introduction of a Crime Reduction Partnership Plan.

Coun Margaret Bannister, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community and member of the Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership, said, "The latest figures are a superb endorsement of the excellent work carried out by the Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership, and most recently as part of the reduction plan.

"The reduction in crime has exceeded expectation and this must be attributed to the commitment of all those who have worked to make the Partnership so successful."

The partners in the Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership are Eastbourne Borough Council, East Sussex County Council, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Eastbourne Homes, Sussex Police, Sussex Police Authority, a representative from Eastbourne Association of Voluntary Services, Eastbourne Business Crime Group, East Sussex Down & Weald Primary Care Trust, a representative from Eastbourne Secondary Schools and Sussex Magistracy.

Chief Superintendent Robin Smith, divisional commander for East Sussex, said, "We are obviously delighted with these figures. Not only do they demonstrate that neighbourhood policing in Eastbourne is having a positive effect, but also show the value of the crime reduction partnership in ensuring that our activities are complementing the community safety work of our colleagues within the group."
