Developers eye green field site

A PROPOSED development in Little Common promises 275 new homes, 300 potential jobs, open spaces for recreation, play areas, retirement complex, and even a possible new school.

Today and tomorrow, Bexhill residents can examine the Marchfield Group’s plan for Barnhorn Green, which is the suggested name for the development on 60 acres of land just north of the A259.

The green field site is bordered by Oakleigh Road and Spring Lane and reaches west towards Grey Horses bend on Barnhorn Road. There is existing housing along two sides.

The exhibition will be held from 10-5.30pm at St Mark’s Church hall and tomorrow from 9.30-1.30pm.

From there it will be possible to gauge local opinion before moving forward with a planning application to Rother District Council.

Meanwhile the developers see this as a major opportunity for Little Common and say the emphasis is very much on family.

Spokesman Gavin Stollar told the Observer: “This is a good news day. We are very pleased and proud to be bringing this forward.

“We believe the scheme has so many more positive aspects to it than the few negatives.

“This can create business, create jobs and create homes - here and now.”

Planning consultant John Boyd said much environmental work was already done, including looking at existing traffic issues and ways of easing congestion, plus investigation of drainage and flooding in discussion with the Environment Agency, Southern Water and RDC.

Access to Barnhorn Green would be via Barnhorn Road, near Grey Horses, Oakleigh Road, Spring Lane plus a pedestrian route from Kite Nest Walk.

Apart from family homes of varying size there will be flats for first time buyers, sheltered accommodation for the elderly, 5,000 square metres of floor space for business with the potential of 300 new jobs, a plot earmarked for possible development of a school - perhaps as an extension to Little Common primary school.

Forty-five per cent of the land will remain undeveloped to provide green space not only for people living at the development, but also those from the village.

The developers claim this will mean new life for Little Common as well as fulfilling the government’s requirement for sustainable growth in terms of housing and employment.

The scheme is not dependent on the Bexhill-Hastings link road.
