District councillor switches to Conservatives

The only Independent on Mid Sussex Council is switching to the Conservative Party.

Anne Jones says that she felt she needed to be in a main party instead of a lone Independent to have a real say in issues.

Mrs Jones, from Burgess Hill, has been a key campaigner on the NHS, family issues, and services for older people for many years and was awarded the MBE for her work.

Mrs Jones will serve from this week as a Conservative and hopes to stand as a Tory in next year's district election.

Mrs Jones was elected as a Liberal in 1983 then served as a Liberal Democrat. She became an Independent after 25 years service after a difference of opinion with the Liberal Democrats.

She said of her latest move: "Obviously people will make up their own minds about this. I took a risk anyway before by opting out and becoming an Independent.

"I have really thought hard and prayed about this decision."
