Eastbourne enjoys July tourism boom

TOURISM in Eastbourne is going from strength to strength as more and more visitors flock to the town.

In July record numbers of people used Eastbourne's tourist information centre and visited the town's official tourism website.

More than 36,300 visitors passed through the doors of Eastbourne Tourist Information Centre in July, a quarter up on the number of visitors for the same month in 2009.

Eastbourne's official destination website VisitEastbourne.com also received a record number of hits, more than 980,000 in July, and the number of internet bookings for overnight accommodation rocketed by 30 per cent.

Eastbourne Borough Council said the town is benefiting from the increase in the number of people taking domestic holidays or 'staycations'.

Cllr Neil Stanley, the borough council's cabinet member for tourism, said, "These figures are fantastic news and testament to the wonderful resort we have here in Eastbourne.

"We have been working hard to ensure that Eastbourne is well placed to benefit from the staycation era, and the weak value of the pound combined with the volcanic ash disruption earlier this year and continued flight strikes, all contribute to making Eastbourne a popular destination for a UK break."

In May Eastbourne was named the sunniest place in mainland Britain with more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country and rivalling many European destinations.

Eastbourne has been using its unique micro climate to attract holidaymakers looking for a sunny break, including its new sunshine campaign that was launched in June aiming to share the Eastbourne sunshine with visitors up and down the country.

According to the council the seafront Bandstand has welcomed a record number of visitors this summer for a concert programme packed with more than 130 performances. In excess of 24,000 concert goers have already visited this year, a 16 per cent increase on the same time last year.

The resort's award-winning Towner Gallery recorded record monthly visitor figures of 12,550 in June and has attracted large numbers of visitors throughout the summer.

More attractions are on the way including Towner's new exhibition Artist Rooms, the Eastbourne Beer Festival, and top performers at Eastbourne Theatres.
