Eastbourne student Charlie delighted with charity apprenticeship

A SUSSEX Downs College student who took up an apprenticeship with Hearing Concern LINK has appeared on television.

Charlie Roberts, 18, has recently undertaken an apprenticeship in business administration through Sussex Downs College and within days of starting he found himself on BBC South East Today explaining the benefit of apprenticeships.

Hearing Concern LINK has headquarters in Eastbourne and is a charity which provides support and information to people with a hearing loss and their families.

Charlie, a former Willingdon School pupil, has recently finished his A levels at Park College but did not want to progress to higher education at the moment and instead opted to get some practical experience.

Charlie said, "I was really pleased to get this apprenticeship.

"I am looking forward to the work based training where I have to produce a portfolio of learning evidence.

"In the longer term I want to specialise in accountancy, the apprenticeship will give me a solid basis from which to move forward.

"The work is just what I wanted to do; I am using my computer skills, general administration and telephone work.

"It is a small office with a mixture of permanent and volunteer staff and we all help support each other. We all get on really well."

Dr Lorraine Gailey, chief executive, said, "Taking on Charlie as an apprentice is cost effective for us, as he will be able to learn whilst doing the job and the government contributes to the costs of his learning.

"His training programme will be designed around our needs and this will lead to him getting a nationally recognised qualification and help us to reach more people living with hearing loss. Charlie has settled well and is a welcome addition to the team."
