ETC Pupils scoop first in Engineers Challenge

PUPILS from Eastbourne Technology College scooped first prize in this year's Young Engineers Challenge.

The school won 100 plus the Young Engineers Trophy. In second place was Bishop Bell, which won 50, and in third place, with 25, was The Causeway School.

The judges' design prize went to Willingdon Community School and the mayor's special prize was won by Pevensey and Westham CE Primary School. Both schools were given a K-Nex Kit.

The judging was co-ordinated by Science and Engineering Ambassador Derek Leppard for Eastbourne EBP.

The challenge involved teams of four Year 6/7 pupils from 18 Eastbourne schools, who were asked to design and build an 'antweight' wheeled robot that would be radio-controlled.

The teams all completed the challenge with some very imaginative machines presented for judging.

Whilst the pupils were busy, their teachers participated in a challenge of their own, organised by Janet Czajkowska from Science and Technology Plus. They had to create a 'robot' that could pick up and move a St. Bede's drinks bottle using K-Nex construction components.

Prizes and certificates were presented by Eastbourne mayor Greg Szanto and Steven Goss-Turner, chair of Eastbourne EBP.
