Fly-tippers strike in Battle

Suspected asbestos was dumped in Battle by fly-tippers over the weekend.

On Saturday night a small truckload of rubbish was left by Battle Abbey Farm in Powdermill Lane.

Battle police were contacted because it was feared the unsightly pile contained harmful asbestos.

But after an inspection by experts at Rother District Council, the rubbish was declared safe and removed.

Rother District Council Sense of Place environmental enforcement manager Michael Adams said: "As soon as we were made aware of the problem, our officers launched an investigation and set about getting the fly-tip cleared up.

"The clearing up of fly-tips as quickly as possible forms part of the council's Sense of Place scheme.

"The project is aimed at improving the street-scene in the district, targeting pockets of fly-tipping and litter and investigating the identify of offenders.

"Members of the public should report fly-tipping to the council on 01424 787000 or use the report a fault facility at www.rother.gov.uk."
