Friends hope to fly Supergirl Mollie to Florida

A little girl's brave battle against leukaemia has led to her being dubbed "supergirl" by her proud friends and family.

They are stepping up their fundraising efforts to send Mollie Podmore, five, of Chalvington Drive, on a dream trip to Disneyland.

Mollie, a pupil at Dudley Infant School, was diagnosed last year and after months of gruelling treatment she is in remission, although she still spends time in hospital.

Now those close to her are desperate to send Mollie, who is mad about princesses, on the trip of a lifetime to Florida, along with her mum Kirsti Simons and sister Ashleigh, 13.

The last few weeks have been hard for the family after the death of Alicia Wootton, who became friends with Mollie when they were both having treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital is London.

Joanne Thomas, Mollie's aunt, said: "Alicia took Mollie under her wing, telling her what to expect from the treatment and Kirsti built up a relationship with Alicia's parents so her death hit us all hard.

"But it made us realise how lucky we are as well. Mollie is in remission but she still has a year of chemotherapy ahead of her. She has been in hospital five times since Christmas because her immune system is very weak and she picks up every infection going."

Despite her illness, Mollie's cheery, upbeat attitude has been an inspiration to those around her.

"She puts us to shame," said Joanne, of Bexhill. "She goes in to hospital, has her treatment and bounces out and wants to go straight back to school. There is no stopping her – she is a real supergirl.

"The whole family has had such a hard time so it would be great if we could send them all away on holiday together. Ashleigh has such a good head on her shoulders, and I have nothing but admiration for my sister."

Next Saturday, March 20, there is a fundraising night at the Conquest Social Club. There will be facepainting and dancing for children from 6pm before a buffet, live music from Blue Moon and an auction with a host of prizes including a Mark Ramprakash signed cricket bat and signed donations from several Premiership football clubs.

On March 28 there will be a exercise fundraiser at Zeus Gym from 10am. Personal trainer Jason Hasler will put people through their paces and entry costs 4.
