Girl, 7, seriously hurt in collision

POLICE have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses after a seven-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries when she and a car were in collision in Bexhill early on Saturday afternoon, May 19.

The accident happened on the A269 London Road near its junction with Havelock Road at around 1.30pm.

The girl, from Heathfield, sustained serious head injuries and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance was called in to assist.

It landed on the nearby King George playing field and a crew member later reported: “We found the child unconscious on our arrival, and requiring emergency treatment. We then flew her to Kings College Hospital, London.”

The helicopter took just 11 minutes to reach Bexhill from its base at Marden, near Tonbridge, in Kent and then 35 minutes - including road transfer of the patient to the aircraft - to get her to KCH at Denmark Hill in the London borough of Southwark for specialist treatment.

There her condition has since changed from “critical” to “serious but stable”. It is understood she is no longer on a ventilator but on Wednesday this week remained in a coma with anxious members of her family keeping watch by her bedside.

The vehicle involved was a red Vauxhall Astra, driven by a 27-year-old woman from Battle and travelling south towards Bexhill town centre. Police closed the road and set up diversions while emergency services were on scene.

It is thought the girl had got out of a parked car and was then in collision with the oncoming vehicle.
