Green light for a new Tesco store in Eastbourne

A FORMER restaurant in Eastbourne is to have a new lease of life as a Tesco store.

Pepper Joe's in Seaside Road closed some time ago and although there have been other ventures within the building, none have been successful and it has been empty for more than a year.

Tesco Stores Ltd has now been given permission for a change of use from a bar to a retail store on the site despite objections from nearby residents and other traders.

While some people feel it would be an asset in a declining area of Eastbourne, others said the new store would have an impact on smaller retailers in Seaside Road and Seaside which could result in other shops closing and being left empty.

A petition, which was signed by 45 people, was handed in but members of Eastbourne Borough Council's planning committee gave the new Tesco store the green light at a meeting on Tuesday night.
