Guided walk around Bexhill
Guided walk around Bexhill
UNDER grey skies and a biting wind, 19 people assembled for Bexhill Museum’s latest guided walk to explore the ground covered in one of the Museum’s projected Heritage Trails. The walk, starting at the War Memorial, covered the planning of the memorial and the controversy regarding which direction the figure of Victory should face. Continuing to Cantelupe Road, Spike Milligan put in an appearance regarding the Forces Corner cafe that stood at the corner of Sea Road and Cantelupe Road. Further along Cantelupe Road the old magistrates court and adjoining police station where shown, now being apartments. Round into Lionel Road, the 1930’s architectural features of Brookfield Court were considered, followed by a look at Grosvenor Court, opened in 1958 as the Alf Evans Convalescent Home, a trade union facility. A bust of Alf Evans stood on the front lawn area. It is no longer there, but the discoloured area where it stood still remains. The De La Warr Parade was walked and the importance of the Sackville Hotel as the town’s premier hotel was mentioned, along with the motor races and time trials that took place during the hotel’s heyday.
Nearby is a Victorian pillar box. one of four in the town. None of the party could guess where the fourth was - a riddle that will intrigue audiences in the future. Back to the start point, the Kursaal, now the site of the Sailing Club, was discussed. A typical walk allowing time to notice things that are missed in the day-to-day driving around town.
