‘Horsemeat scandal won’t get the batter of me ...’
13/2/13- Chris Kaprian outside The Fisherman's in Little Common.
LITTLE Common chip shop proprietor Chris Kyprian is certain his customers won’t be buying pies and burgers containing horsemeat.
Because until Chris, of The Fisherman’s restaurant in Cooden Sea Road, has guarantees from his suppliers that there is not a hint of horse DNA in their products, he won’t be selling them.
Chris, who has run his business overlooking the A259 roundabout at Little Common for the past 15 years, said: “I have some very loyal customers here.
“I would be horrified if I thought that they were eating horsemeat because of something I had sold them, so to be certain I’ve withdrawn meat pies and burgers from sale until I can be absolutely sure they are alright.”
Chris’s decision has not been taken lightly, as he reckons to sell between 100 to 200 burgers and meat pies a week in addition to his stock-in-trade, fish and chips.
Chris said his wife, Penny, who regularly rides horses, has been upset by revelations that many so-called beef products in fact contain a percentage of horsemeat.
An audit of all horse abattoirs in the UK has been ordered by Andrew Rhodes, director of operations at the Food Standards Agency, after what he described as an apparent “ blatant misleading of consumers.”
And Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, said: “I expect the full force of the law to be brought down on anyone involved in this kind of activity.”
Meanwhile Chris, who has put up notices in his shop to say meat product sales are currently suspended, said: “My main concern is that my customers feel confident that they are getting exactly what they pay for.”
