REPLACEMENT of one key piece of medical equipment and the provision of another is making the treatment of critically-ill Bexhill patients more efficient.

Staff at the Critical Care Unit at the Conquest Hospital, where a high proportion of the patients are from Bexhill, are so delighted with the new equipment that they invited the League of Friends of Bexhill Hospital to see what the league’s money has bought.

The photocall on February 1 was arranged by risk and health and safety manager Tim Leakey.

In company with Sister Veronica Carey, unit manager Simon Speed explained the difference the league’s purchase of a replacement electro-cardiograph machine had made. “The old machine was obsolete and was continually breaking down. It was so unreliable for the staff and patients that we were in desperate need for a new one.

“This one has a number of advantages. It uses the same consumables as the rest of the hospital and will link into its computer system because it is made by the same company.

“It is used for recording complex heart cases.

“It can identify things like heart attacks and it is certainly an essential piece of equipment.”

Speaking outside the busy High Dependency Unit, he said: “It will link in with the equipment by the patient’s bed.”

The ECG machine is mounted on wheels for ease of mobility about the unit. It cost £6,000 and gives medical staff an instant on-screen read-out of its findings.

The Bexhill league has also bought six specialised blood pumps at a cost of £18,000. The pumps deliver exactly measured doses of medication without the risk of human error.

The league was represented by president John Dowling, secretary Ann Dowling, social secretary Harriet Chapman and committee member Douglas Mayne.

The unit manager explained that the six will supplement pumps previously provided by the league and will link in with the £120,000 clinical information system which the league has purchased. The system is currently being installed and is expected to be in use by late March.
