A BEXHILL resident’s New Year de-clutter turned up old photographs of clarinetist to the royals Julian Egerton - and she hopes to trace family members so she can return them.

Gwenda Lee first came across the four black and white photos around 20 years ago. They were enclosed in a page taken from The Musical Times dated March 1, 1928, and tucked inside the leaves of a book she had purchased at a book sale. On the Musical Times page is an article on clarinetist Julian Egerton.

Gwenda said: “The article and photographs were found inside a book bought at a local church book sale some years ago and I regret not attempting to find their owner sooner.

“Julian Egerton is described in the article as being ‘in his eightieth year’ and he is clearly shown in the photographs.

“An attractive young woman is also shown, playing music with Mr Egerton and practising golf.”

The photographs may well be of historical significance. Julian Egerton was a British classical clarinetist born in 1848 and he had a long career, performing until the age of 93. He studied under George Tyler of the Royal Philharmonic Society and was a professor at the Royal College of Music.

He played in the private bands of Queen Victoria and King Edward V11 and was the first British clarinetist to perform Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet Op. 115. His Fieldhouse clarinets are displayed in the Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments. He married twice and had seven children and Gwenda hopes that Mr Egerton still has living relatives.

“I should be grateful to hear through the Bexhill Observer from anyone who can offer any information as to who the photos might belong to, as I would like to return them to the original owner or a descendant.”
