Ice misery on school footpath
PARENTS at All Saints Primary School are “really fed up” with lack of response over dangerous ice on the footpath outside.
Kathy Swatridge, of Ingrams Avenue, complained the footpath which children use in and out of school has not been safe this week.
She claimed Rother District Council, East Sussex County Council and the school itself were not prepared to take responsibility.
She had contacted the Highways Agency emergency number and been told the manpower was not available and nobody could be sent out.
Kathy said: “No-one is doing it. But it’s the only way the children can get into school. Every single child has to walk down that alleyway to get into school, and it is so dangerous. I saw one dad on crutches having to go down there taking his children to school. We are really fed up.
“It doesnt take much for them to do it - even just putting some grit down - otherwise someone is going to hurt themselves.”
ESCC’s Roger Williams, head of highways, said: “I understand everyone would like their road and pavement gritted, but we don’t have the resources to do everything and we need to focus on clearing and salting the main routes and keeping essential services running.
“With the snow of the last few days, our fleet of 25 gritters have been going out to grit nearly 1,000 miles of the top priority roads in the county.
“As there has been no further snowfall, we are looking at gritting additional roads including All Saints Lane, to disperse the build up of ice, but we do not routinely grit pavements
“We are encouraging people to act in a neighbourly way by clearing snow and ice from pavements, pathways and other public spaces.
“I understand there aren’t people living along this stretch of pavement, but often, in situations like this, the local community can help themselves by working together to clear the ice.”
