Lucky escape for elderly woman who collapsed while cooking

AN ELDERLY woman who collapsed in her kitchen had a lucky escape after the food she was cooking under the grill began to overheat and smoulder.

The incident happened at around 3pm this afternoon (Sunday).

The woman, who lives in College Road, managed to phone for an ambulance after she was unable to get up, and the quick-thinking 999 call operator hearing the smoke alarm in the background, also alerted the fire service.

Fire crews attended the scene made safe the grill and helped the woman up. She was then treated at home by paramedics.
