Marathon man Antony prepares for next challenge

AN EASTBOURNE worker who is in the middle of a marathon challenge to complete a string of marathons and one of the world's toughest half-marathons has completed the second leg of the challenge in Barcelona.

Antony Masters, who is raising funds and awareness for the Kent Air Ambulance, finished the Spanish city's marathon, 26.2 miles, in four hours 41 minutes and 59 seconds.

Antony, pictured above, a PR and marketing executive for BMI The Esperance Hospital in Eastbourne, joined more than 13,000 others when the marathon got underway at Placa d'Espanya in the centre of the Catalan capital. It then snaked its way through the city and past some of Barcelona's famous landmarks like Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia cathedral, FC Barcelona's stadium – Camp Nou and the famous waterfront that was redeveloped for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The marathon finished back where it started at Placa d'Espanya.

The 35-year-old has now completed two – New York in November 2009, and Barcelona in March 2010 – of the four marathons and a half marathon. Next up for Antony is a return to UK soil and the inaugural Brighton Marathon on April 18. He will then take a break over the summer before he competes in one of the world's toughest half-marathons – The Great North Run in Newcastle in September and then a week later Antony heads off to Berlin for the German capital's marathon.

East Sussex county fundraiser for Sussex Air Ambulance Bridget Pepper said, "It's a great result for Antony. He's certainly determined to complete this challenge to raise funds and awareness on our behalf. It's really exciting to be able to support Antony on his marathon challenge too and to be able to keep in touch with his progress during each race.

"It's exciting as the next marathon is on home soil and so we're going to be able to physically support him on the route through Brighton."
