MP visits shop for heart campaign

The town's MP showed his support for a campaign this week designed to raise more awareness of heart disease.

Bexhill MP Greg Barker visited the town's British Heart Foundation (BHF) as part of National Heart Month and to hear about the work the store has been doing locally to raise money.

Geraldine Poynter, shop manager, said the shop in Devonshire Road has been collecting donations, handing out fund-raising packs and is selling so many 'Love Notes' that the shop's window is now completely covered.

She said: "Businesses have put up collecting boxes in their shops, and across Bexhill residents have pledged to join the Wear Red Day today (Friday)."

National Heart Month kicked off on February 1 with iconic buildings across the UK, including the London Eye and the Eden Project, lit up red.

Heart and circulatory diseases cause one in three of all deaths in the UK and affect people of all ages.

The BHF invests the money it raises in care, research and raising awareness about the diseases.

Mr Barker said: "Heart disease and related illnesses are still a big killer in the UK and Bexhill is no exception.

"The volunteers in Bexhill do a fantastic job and really outdid themselves with this latest campaign.

"Wouldn't it be great if next year our own De La Warr Pavilion could be lit up to join the other iconic building around the country which are illuminated as part of the national BHF campaign."
