New concept in farming for the community
A free Food and Farming Hour will take place at Orchard Barn Classroom, Ivyland Farm, Netherfield, on Wednesday September 29, 6-7pm.
Visitors on the day can enjoy a short talk and slideshow presentation on Community Supported Agriculture, by Sarah Blackford.
The community supported agriculture concept is a partnership between farmers and the local community providing mutual benefits and reconnecting the people to the land where their food is grown.
Sarah Blackford set up Crowhurst Community Agriculture at Upper Wilting Farm, Crowhurst, in 2008.
The group currently involves 25 families growing fruit and vegetables together on two acres of land.
The group has also recently taken over the management of 250 top fruit trees and is just about to embark upon a community flock of laying hens and keeping bees.
Sarah said: "The families involved are having the opportunity of truly learning where their food comes from and being involved in the hands on task of producing it and then being able to take it home and eat it.
"The opportunity for the farm business is that this group of families are all walking, talking ambassadors' for the farm, spreading the word locally about the farm enterprises and bringing new customers to the farm shop."
This talk will be an opportunity to learn more about community farming, and what is involved for those that might want to consider having their own group.
