No to Rye ostrich farm

Plans to farm ostrich type birds at Rye Harbour Road have met with opposition from Rye Town Council.

The plans are for the Kingdom Hall site and include the erection of a 100 foot long barn to house and feed young rhea stock.

Rye Council's planning committee chairman Cllr Frank Palmer said: "This is not a particularly distinguished looking design."

Mayor Cllr Paul Osborne said: "It seems under planning rules that farm buildings can go up wherever as long as a need can be proved.

"A bungalow would be refused on that site yet you can have a carbuncle of a barn there."

Cllr David Wright said: "The need seems to be purely one of profit. Rheas are a very profitable bird to farm.

"Basically this is a factory farm and we should oppose it. This is a factory in Rye's strategic gap."

Cllr Jo Kirkham said: "The view of the town and river from Rye Harbour Road is a very famous one and that development would block most of it."
