Park amenities to be run as one

Egerton Park

Egerton Park

A LEASE to run the refreshment kiosk and a contract to run boating and tennis facilities in Egerton Park, Bexhill, is being awarded to an as yet unnamed operator,

Rother District Council’s Cabinet agreed at a meeting on Monday that this would be the best course of action for the longer term.

The kiosk was completed last year as part of a refurbishment project at Egerton Park and has been run on a temporary lease since then.

Under a previous grounds maintenance contract, the nearby boating lake and tennis courts were administered separately by John O’Conner, who bore the costs but also kept any income generated.

Now that a new grounds maintenance contract exists with The Landscape Group, the chance came to either require the contractor to do as O’Conner’s had done, or to make other arrangements.

It was decided to offer kiosk, tennis and boating as a package and expressions of interest were invited on that basis.

Of seven parties who originally applied, the list was whittled down to just two, and on Monday “Applicant A” was chosen to receive a two year lease .

If at the end of this period the arrangement proves successful, Rother’s chief executive , Derek Stevens, was granted delegated powers to extend the deal for a further three years.

Proposer, Cllr Martin Kenward, said: “It’s a good news story. This was costing the council a lot of money, but now we have the prospect of making some.”

Detailed terms were discussed after Press and public had been excluded.
