Pensioner Peggy takes the plunge for hospice

Plucky pensioner Peggy Pyke-Lees was the star of the show at St Michael's Hospice's latest charity abseil.

The 89-year-old became the oldest person to ever take part in the popular annual event after cascading down the 128 feet side of Ocean House on Sunday.

She was watched by her anxious family - including her daughter Celia, the current chief executive of the St Leonards charity.

The pensioner was one of 28 people who braved strong winds to tackle the descent at the weekend and although a final total has yet to totted up, organisers are hopeful it was another bumper event.

Marcia Dart, head fundraiser at the hospice, said: "We are sure Peggy is the oldest person we have had take part since we started.

"She certainly showed everyone how it should be done and also won a prize for the best fancy dress.

"All the abseilers did brilliantly, despite the high wind. They were enthusiastic and some wanted to go down twice.

"We owe a very big thank you to everyone – participants, volunteers and staff at Ocean House - who helped to make the event such a success."

All proceeds go to help pay for the day-to-day running of the Upper Maze Hill charity.
