President of Bexhill charity’s BEM honour

JENNY Private’s got her hat on - it can only mean one thing. This month saw the President of Homecall receive her British Empire Medal at an investiture which took place at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.

She was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for her services to Homecall, the Bexhill-based charity for the blind and partially sighted. Homecall offers a volunteer service to support people in their own homes, in and around the town on Bexhill, with the aim of helping them continue to live an independent lift wherever possible.

Jenny was presented with her award by Mr Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, representing her Majesty the Queen.

She described it as “the most wonderful afternoon.”

Jenny’s medal came in recognition of the leadership she showed keeping Homecall afloat when council funding was withdrawn - even though the charity had won the Queen’s award for voluntary service.

Jenny commented: “When the countywide Homecall schemes announced their closure back in 2008 I was determined, if it was at all possible, to continue the charity in the Bexhill area.

“Somewhere between 50 and 60 blind or partially sighted people living in our town benefit from the support of a Homecall volunteer on an ongoing basis.

“I would never have been able to achieve my aim without the support of those wonderful volunteers, several of whom came forward to stand as Trustees.

“Without exception all our Trustees continue in their roles and I was only too pleased to have the opportunity of becoming a Trustee myself when I retired last year. We are also very lucky to have as our patron Amanda Hamblin, whose support has been invaluable.”

Homecall’s scheme manager is Maureen Daley - for details of the charity or to nominate someone who might need help call her on 01424 214458.
