Protest against 100 homes plan Kings Drive

MORE than 150 people took part in a peaceful demonstration to protest at plans to build new homes in Kings Drive at the weekend.

They gathered at the site next to the hospital on Saturday morning ahead of the public inquiry taking place at Eastbourne Town Hall later this month over whether more than 100 houses and apartments should be built.

Residents together with councillors across the parties are unanimously opposed to the development and they turned out in force to demonstrate with their banner, placards and balloons.

Passing motorists also sounded their horns in support.

The protesters say the site is unsuitable for the development, being proposed by the Trustees of the Chatsworth Estate, and would lead to an increase in traffic on an already busy stretch of road.

They also say it would be "tragic" to lose the unique green space to a major development.

The proposal has already been turned down by Eastbourne Borough Council twice and once by a planning inspector on appeal.

Protesters are urging all those against the development to join a further similar protest at 9.30am on Tuesday September 21 which is the first day of the enquiry at the Town Hall and by attending on any of the three days for an hour or so between 10am and 5pm.

Campaigners say they want to send a strong message to the inspector for local democracy. Further details are at www.kingsdrivedevelopment.co.uk
