Quitters' advice from ex-smokers

FOUR local quitters marked No Smoking Day (March 10) by telling their inspirational stories at the new Quit Shop in Langney Shopping Centre.

Most of them had tried on several occasions to give up by themselves, without success. Between them they had smoked for 116 years - between 25 and 30 years each. Their reasons for stopping included the arrival of grandchildren, giving up for good health and wanting to stay alive longer.

The four say they have noticed a lot of positive changes to their health and some said clouds of smoke made by other people now seem disgusting.

Half of those who use their local NHS Stop Smoking Service are still not smoking four weeks later. The NHS says its service and medicines makes people up to four times more likely to be successful. The services are available regardless of how many times people have tried to give up smoking or how addicted they are. Some smokers will need longer-term support and treatment which is also available.

Stop smoking manager Jeanette Williams said, "The new Quit Shop means we can take our service to where people are already rather, than expect them to go out of their way to come and find us. Because we are now convenient, clinic staff have seen 40 per cent more people in the last two months who would like to stop smoking.

"We also need to thank Barry Reece, Langney Shopping Centre manager, and his team for helping us make it happen."

For more information visit www.smokefree.nhs.uk or call the free local NHS Helpline on 0800 917 8896. The Quit Shop in Langney Shopping Centre is open between 10.30am and 1pm on Tuesday and 10.30am to 12noon tomorrow (March 13).

The team will also be in the Arndale Centre on March 13. People who sign up to stop smoking before March 31 can claim a 30 voucher.
