Rats’ nest in empty town centre home

ATTEMPTS are being made to clean up Bexhill town’s centre, but what of residential streets nearby?

An abandoned terraced house in Windsor Road has become a problem for neighbours who complain rat infestation and neglect are impacting on their own homes.

Family man Paul Plim who lives opposite claims the property has been empty for over ten years and not maintained. He said: “This year it received a lick of paint on its exterior, but the interior is harbouring a family of rats that are causing concern for those us in the neighbourhood with small children.

I have seen on several occasions rats entering and leaving the property via a gnawed hole in the front door that has exposed the initial foundations of the house.

It’s such a shame to see this property in a reasonably priced residential area close to all amenities go to waste, with so many families desperate to find such accommodation in Bexhill.”

He said tenants living next door are horrified to have rats chewing through floorboards into their house with one even running across the floor one evening and a mum said mould is spreading from it into a child’s bedroom which is another concern.

Resident Kaye Gabriel who also lives across the street said: “It does worry me.

“And it is a lovely property going to waste.” A couple of doors down on the same side Rowina Macloud added: “It should not be empty.

“It is in a filthy condition and detrimental to other people’s properties.”

Rother District Council’s head of environmental health Richard Parker Harding said: “The council is aware of this property and has served notice on the owner to treat the rats. Unfortunately the owner has not carried out the necessary works and therefore we will be undertaking the works ourselves and recharging the owner for the costs incurred.”
