Residents concerns over late-night plan

CLAIMS that a conga is “on not infrequent occasions” danced down a Bexhill street to the accompaniment of loud music are being laid against a local restaurant.

It is one of several objections to a bid by Trattoria Italiana in Devonshire Road, Bexhill, to secure a licence to sell alcohol seven nights a week between 10am and midnight, for consumption both on and off the premises.

Applicant Piergiorgio Esposto is also seeking a licence for late night refreshment (11pm to midnight), opening hours of 10am to midnight, Monday to Sunday, and on New Year’s Eve until 2am.

But ranged against the application are objections from seven neighbours, all of which are listed in agenda papers for Rother District Council’s general licensing panel, meeting at Bexhill Town Hall next Wednesday, March 20 at 11.30am.

The bid has come about after Trattoria Italiana’s expansion into premises south of its present site, on the same side of the road and opposite flats occupied by the seven objectors at Dalmore Court.

One, Nigel Cornford, notes: “Already our lives are blighted by the inconsiderate behaviour of staff involved in shouting, slamming taxi doors and revving up noisy motorbikes past 11pm”.

As a cancer patient, he says rest and recuperation are a major part of his quality of life.

And Mrs Kathleen McGarvey said: “On not infrequent occasions, particularly when a party has been booked, the music is loud and the singer with his wif-fi microphone has been seen and heard to lead a conga of partygoers around the letterbox down the street”

She added: “We are not party poopers, but there is a limit to what we should be expected to put up with.”

Police, the planning authority, the council’s noise team and others have made no representations against Mr Esposto’s application.

Emails supporting his bid have been received, and only one complaint about loud music and singing was registered, on September 12, 2012.
