Robbed Blind

A charity shop in St Leonards Road was broken into and robbed of £2,000 worth of donated goods.

Even the collection box from behind the till was taken.

Now its volunteer staff are asking – how could anyone do this to us?

The robbery took place overnight at Hastings and Rother Voluntary Association for the Blind on Wednesday last week and was discovered by a regular helper dropping off donations early on Thursday morning.

He found the narrow glass panel to the right of the front door had been smashed and someone had climbed through the remaining shards to get to the valuable items locked away inside. The jewellery cabinet was forced open and precious pieces taken, while goods such as a Victorian barometer, crystal bowls, and figurines were also stolen.

"It was all our good bits that our wonderful clientele give us," said shop manager Yvonne Snell.

"They knew what to go for and didn't hesitate."

The branch shop has been open in Bexhill for approximately 13 years and has 15 volunteers at present.

Hastings and Rother Voluntary Association for the Blind has a nursing home and day centre in Upper Maize Hill in St Leonards.

Yvonne added: "We had to shut the shop on Thursday which is our busiest day. Everyone comes on Thursday morning to see if they can get our beautiful bargains and it is always our best takings day.

"I was quite shocked about the break in – I have been manager here for about 12 years. You do feel as if someone had broken into your private space.

"Isn't it sad it comes down to people breaking into charity shops for the blind?"

The shop, which specialises in furniture, is now hoping donations will be sent in to make up for the loss.

"Bexhill is a wonderful place to be," said assistant manager Joe Gallastegui.

"There are such nice people who come in here and we are so well supported, it has been fantastic. But it is such a shame something like this should happen in our lovely little town. We are sure the people of Bexhill will support us and rally round with their donations to help us get over this."

Call the branch on 01424 213154.
