“CHUFFED as monkeys” is how local animal sanctuary owner, Barby Keel, describes both hers and her staff’s feelings after a recent appeal for funds has reaped rewards.

Around £14,000 is needed to replace outdated buildings on the Freezeland Lane site. These comprise of a pen and sheds that house some of the hundreds of animals that live at the sanctuary. Having been inundated with unwanted pets after Christmas, which Barby described as more than she’d ever seen before, financially the situation had become very hard. Through the Bexhill Observer, Barby appealed for help and said: “I hate having to ask for help like this, but it’s just such a big sum to find when we’re already spending so much on feeding, sheltering and looking after the animals on a day-to-day basis.” Despite Barby’s hesitation in appealing for funds, local people did what they always do best in a crisis and dug deep. Barby said: “We have had an absolutely super response and are well on the way to our target. Money is still dwindling in. I want to thank all the well wishers for their donations - one little girl, Alice, donated her £5 pocket money! It’s wonderful and really lifted our spirits - we are all chuffed as monkeys.”

Work is due to start on the new buildings in a little over a week’s time and this will take two to three weeks to complete. In the meantime, the animals will be moved into temporay accomodation. Barby is appealing for help demolishing and clearing the old premises. “We can cut down the costs if we pull down the old buildings ourselves but just have one week in which to do it before the builders arrive, so it will be all hands on deck and we welcome the help of any volunteers from Monday February 25.” To cut down costs further Barby has a wish list, including wood, screws, staples etc.
