Southern Rail's ticket 'anomaly'

AN APPARENT 'anomaly' with Southern rail fares has meant it's been cheaper to travel between Hastings and Bexhill, than St Leonards Warrior Square to Bexhill, despite it being a shorter distance.

Since January a standard day return ticket from Hastings to Bexhill, and visa versa, has cost 2.90, whilst a return ticket from St Leonards Warrior Square, 0.7 of a mile closer to Bexhill, costs 10p more at 3.00.

Many regular travellers on this route were quick to notice the difference and some St Leonards Warrior Square passengers choose instead to purchase tickets from Hastings to Bexhill in order to take advantage of the saving.

One passenger, who doesn't want to be named, takes the train to work in Bexhill from St Leonards Warrior Square three times a week, said:

"The 10p difference doesn't sound much but for the three days a week I work over a year those 10ps add up to nearly 16.

"It doesn't make sense why it's cheaper from Hastings when St Leonards is nearer to Bexhill."

Following Observer enquiries a spokesman for Southern Rail said the fare difference was an error which they had not been aware of:

"It is a mistake that we missed and thanks to you we will put it right.

"It turns out to be an anomaly which will be corrected in September when the new fares come in.

"Occasionally these things do happen but we are usually very quick to notice them."
