Stephen Lloyd MP meets Fairtrade Eastbourne group

EASTBOURNE MP Stephen Lloyd met with Fairtrade Eastbourne to discuss the group's efforts.

Fairtrade Eastbourne has been campaigning for more than five years to help raise local awareness about the benefits Fairtrade brings to producers in poorer countries and also the many products certified as Fairtrade. The group believes that such greater awareness will feed into greater demand locally and so encourage businesses to use more Fairtrade and to make it more available.

Mr Lloyd said, "I'm extremely enthusiastic about the Fairtrade movement and its aim to benefit the public economically, environmentally and ethically.

"I look forward to working with Fairtrade Eastbourne closely over the coming months in promoting the values of the cause across Eastbourne and Willingdon.

"I think Eastbourne should be a Fairtrade Town. I think it will make a difference to the image that Eastbourne has and would be met with tremendous enthusiasm from people across Eastbourne from the schools up to pensioners."

Matthew Wilkinson, group chair of Fairtrade Eastbourne, said, "Choosing Fairtrade usually means only a small difference to us at the checkout, but it means an enormous difference to the poor farmers at the other end of the supply chain."
