Suspended jail term for local burglar

A BEXHILL man has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, on charges relating to local burglaries.

Daniel Shoesmith, aged 20, of Dorset Road, Bexhill, appeared before Hastings magistrates on February 22, just a day after his arrest.

He admitted a burglary at Bexhill Angling Club in De La Warr Parade on February 20 in which a large quantity of food and drink was stolen.

Considerable damage was caused to the doors of the club as Shoesmith forced his way into the premises.

He also pleaded guilty to an attempted burglary at premises in Dorset Road - the same road in which he lives.

Following the case, Sergeant Stuart Mullins, of the Bexhill Neighbourhood Policing Team, said that when officers went to arrest him on suspicion of being involved, they found property stolen from Bexhill Angling Club at his home.

Sgt Mullins said: “This arrest was thanks to local information, not just from police officers and police community support officers led by my colleague, Sgt Sarah Porter, but also from members of the public.

“I’d like to thank all those people who call us about suspicious activity. It is often their information that can help complete the picture when our officers are investigating.”

Sgt Mullins added: “Burlary, whether committed in someone’s home or place of business, can be devastating and we do all we can to help prevent and deter this crime.

“I’d also like to make the point that when it does happen, we do our utmost to investigate thoroughly.”

He described Shoesmith’s arrest and conviction as “significant”.

Meanwhile, detectives are still making enquiries concerning several other break-ins in Bexhill, where earlier this year sheds, garages and outbuildings were targeted by thieves and several valuable bicycles were stolen.

Two men arrested on suspicion of burglary are currently on police bail pending further investigations.

Anyone noticing any suspicious activity, vehicles or people should note details and telephone police on 101 or use the free, anonymous Crimestoppers linkline, 0800 555111. In emergency, dial 999.
