Temporary road changes should be made permanent, says MP
TEMPORARY traffic priority changes introduced when Market Street, Lewes, was resurfaced should stay, says MP Norman Baker.
In a letter to East Sussex County Council transport director Rupert Clubb, Mr Baker asked for arrangements in place during the road works could be reinstated. Traffic from Fisher Street was given priority ahead of traffic coming off the Offham Road.
Mr Baker said: 'This seemed to work rather well and I was surprised the county council chose to revert to the previous priority arrangements.'
Mr Baker believes the benefits of making Offham Road traffic give way calmed traffic on a stretch of road where there have been complaints about speeding and prevented the back-up of traffic along Fisher Street.
This, he says, sometimes reaches back to the High Street junction lights and beyond down Station Street.
He added: 'A further complication is that drivers now seem unclear as to which direction has priority and worry that a prang might occur here, if it has not already.'
The roadworks which took place in early November caused tailbacks as far as the Beddingham roundabout and in Southover as drivers tried to avoid the town centre snarl-ups.
Highways engineers re-layed Market Street's block paving which had become damaged.
