Thieves steal parishioner's handbag from church

A parishioner had her handbag stolen from a village church after attending a service on Sunday.

The 56-year-old woman left her bag in a pew at St Giles Church, Bodiam, at around 12.15pm.

Fifteen minutes later the woman, who lives in Ewhurst Green, returned to the church to get the bag back, only to find it had been stolen.

The handbag contained 30 cash, a set of keys and various bank cards.

A short time later, someone tried to use the card at the ATM machine at Sainsbury's in Hastings.

Police are hoping to view CCTV footage in a bid to catch the culprit.

Sergeant Dan Russell, of Battle police, said: "It's very sad a person attending a religious service has been the victim of crime.

"We hope to gain CCTV evidence from the usage of the card and identify the suspect."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 60 70 999.
