Treasure trove of stamps and coins
7/2/12- Coin and Stamp evaluation at the Cooden Beach Hotel, Bexhill. Ian Hunter from Warwick and Warwick discusses Carol Gray's cigarette card collection
DOZENS of stamp and coin collectors eager to have their treasures valued by one of the country’s leading auctioneers flocked to the Cooden Beach Hotel on Tuesday (February 7).
Making an annual visit to the local area was Ian Hunter, of Warwick and Warwick stamp and collectables auctioneers. He said there was a considerable amount of items to cast his expert eye over. “It was a good day and a lot of people attended with coins, stamps, postcards etc. One gentleman bought along an interesting group of medals that had belonged to his grandfather who had been in both the Boer War and the First World War. A number of the medals were rare and worth several thousand pounds.”
Other items of particular interest was a collection of Barbados stamps which Mr Hunter said were worth somewhere in the region of £15-£20,000. There was also a few Penny Black stamps, but Mr Hunter said they are not all as valuable as some might think. “There were 65 million Penny Blacks printed, most are worth between £5-£10, though some are more valuable and worth more.”
Mr Hunter also took a number of items back to Warwick for further valuation and thanked local folk for attending and making the day “a considerable success”.
