Walk To School Month

Getting to school has a global dimension this October as schools are invited to sign up for a competition marking International Walk to School Month.

Secondary-level students have a chance to win two 150 digital cameras – one for themselves, and one for their school - in a photo competition.

They are being asked to creatively capture their school journey in a captioned, titled image.

Primary-stage pupils are being challenged to fill a large foot template with words, drawings, short stories or poems that describe the sights, sounds, feelings and experiences of their school journey.

They could win a share of vouchers and pedometers worth a total of around 360.

Every primary or primary-phase special school registering will be sent stickers for all its pupils and staff members.

Children will be also be encouraged to take the foot outlines home to work on, so that the message of East Sussex County Council's latest sustainable travel promotion is spread to parents and carers too.

The winning primary and secondary schools will also be presented with the County Council's Walk to School trophies. School staff entering the competition can win some warm clothing items donated by Natural England.

Entries, which must be received by 5 November, will be assessed for their creativity and standard of presentation by the County Council's School Travel Plan team.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: "I hope that children and parents in East Sussex will enjoy taking part in this competition as part of International Walk to School Month. Global warming is a worldwide issue and walking to school not only helps children keep fit and healthy, but by encouraging parents to leave their cars will also cut congestion and pollution."
