Wealden Police warn bike thieves may be out during holidays
SUMMER and particularly the school holidays offer prime pickings for thieves who target bicycles left unlocked and unattended.
Wealden Police are warning cyclists to securely lock their bikes and make sure that places that they are left such as sheds and garages are also secure.
The reminder comes during the summer holidays when many families will be taking their youngsters out on their bikes.
Many are stolen on the streets, whilst others are taken from garden sheds and garages overnight.
Police advice is:
• Park your bicycle safely and considerately where it will not cause an obstruction to others.
• Always lock your bicycle when you leave it unattended, even if it is only for a few minutes while you pop into a local shop.
• Lock your bicycle through the frame and if possible to a fixed structure such as a railing.
• Secure your bicycle in well lit areas and if possible in areas where town centre CCTV operates.
• Lock the wheels and other detachable parts.
• Mark your bicycle with your postcode and house number, ideally with high visibility tamper proof labels.
• Take a photograph of your bicycle - in the event of loss or theft, it may help its recovery.
Sergeant Steve Erthington from Wealden Police said, "When leaving bikes unattended, for example outside a shop or in a garden, they are vulnerable to theft.
"There are a number of cycle security devices to attach to bikes to make them more resilient to theft."
Bike owners can also contact their local Neighbourhood Policing Team via www.sussex.police.uk where an appointment can be made for their bikes to be security stamped.
