Young scientists reach national final in London

THE sky’s the limit for a group of talented local youngsters who have been shortlisted as finalists in the National Science & Engineering Competition to be held in London next week.

They were previously students at St Richard’s Catholic College (which specialises in science) the six members of the team are representing Bexhill with their StRATOS (St Richard’s Adventure to Observe Space) project.

The Year 11 pupils involved were Hannah Jones (Lead Scientist), Mary George, Larissa Taylor, Connor Durkin, Lucy Whittaker, and Vijay Jackson.

The StRATOS project involved the launch of a weather balloon tethered to a payload containing a camera, with the stated aim of taking photos of the curvature of the Earth from near-space.

The team were all awarded Gold Crest Awards for the project and have extended the original remit by presenting a video diary and a summary to the East Sussex Astronomical Society.

St Richard’s teacher, Dr Durkin, praised the team for their efforts. “The well planned and executed project was triumphant in returning photographic images beyond the expectations of a simple school project - a truly awesome and inspiring result.”

The National Science & Engineering Competition, to be held at The Big Bang Young Scientists and Engineers Fair, London ExCel, March 14-19, rewards students aged 11-18 years old, who have achieved excellence in a science, technology, engineering or maths project.

Entrants in the senior age category compete for the top prizes of Young Scientist of the Year and Young Engineer of the Year.

Dr Durkin said reaching the final of the competition is quite a coup. “This is an incredible achievement, and being able to attend The Big Bang Fair to showcase our project and possibly win an award at this exciting event would be a valuable educational and personal experience for each individual of the team.”
