Motorists in Bognor Regis have been urged to show their support for the town.

They have the chance from today to donate £1 for a yellow sticker to state their backing for free parking.

Bognor Regis Traders’ Association has created the sticker to go on the display discs which enable drivers to enjoy two hours without paying in the Lyon Street and Fitzleet car parks.

The round stickers are available from all the outlets in the town’s shoppers’ guide.

One of the leaders of the association, shopowner Chris Heaps, said he was hopeful the stickers would be well supported.

“We have had a number of inquiries from the public asking about new discs now the first year of the free parking scheme is coming to an end.

“They have been very positive towards displaying the sticker.

“I would hope we can use that to get people to buy the stickers and there will also be some peer pressure where motorists without stickers will want to join those with them.

“A pound is not a lot to pay for a year’s free parking.”

The free parking scheme was launched last December 1 by Arun and Bognor councils and Bognor’s traders. Motorists bought a £1 disc to enable them to take part. More than 12,000 have been sold.

Those with discs do not need new ones once the second year begins.

But any driver without a disc still has to buy one to take part.

Paul Wells, another town centre shopowner, said: “Free parking has been extremely popular this year with local people.

“It’s now a case of asking them to support the scheme with a small donation. Everybody benefits throughout the town if they do that – the people who use the free parking and the traders.”

Money from the sale of the stickers will help the traders pay £7,000 towards the cost of scrapping the parking charges. Both councils are putting in £29,000.

“It’s extremely difficult to get the national retailers to make financial contributions towards free parking,” said Mr Wells. “That means a lot of the money from the traders has to be paid by small businesses.”

The production of the stickers is the first time Bognor’s town centre traders have banded together in this way.
