Bexhill MP, Greg Barker, celebrated National Apprenticeship Week by meeting apprentices at two local businesses.

Greg visited Emma Hellier’s hairdressing salon in Sackville Road where he met apprentice Zoe Rainger. Zoe is studying for an NVQ 2 in Hairdressing, combining work experience at the salon with studies at Sussex Coast College.

Emma Hellier said apprentices are an integral part of the team, adding: “It’s the best way to learn our trade.”

Greg then called into Hastings Furniture Service (HFS), a registered charity and award-winning social enterprise company in London Road, to meet Customer Service Apprentice Adam Donovan. Adam began working with HFS on their L-earn programme, a work-based, practical training options for 16-19years that helps prepare for apprenticeships, college or work. He was then offered the opportunity to continue work-based training with HFS on a full apprenticeship.

Adam said: “I love my job at HFS because I’m learning while working with a great group of people to make a positive difference for others in our local community, by collecting and reusing furniture and electrical goods for people with low incomes.”

Greg said he was delighted to meet Zoe and Adam, adding: “They clearly enjoy their work and the opportunity to be earning whilst learning valuable skills for their future careers.

“It demonstrates what a wide range of rewarding apprenticeship opportunities there are for young people in our area.”

National Apprenticeship Week (March 3-7) celebrates apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
