A Bexhill man was arrested after a Belgian student died after being hit by a car in Eastbourne last night (Wednesday, August 12).

The 45-year-old driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The 16-year-old pedestrian sustained fatal injuries in the incident involving a grey Hyundai i800 in Susans Road at just past 11pm.

She was treated by paramedics at the scene near the junction with Pevensey Road and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where she sadly died a short while later.

The man was still in custody on Thursday morning.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have seen the Hyundai in the area in the time leading up to it to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Coat.
