Preveiw: From the Bauhaus to today, Burton Gallery
One of the constant delights of the art scene in 1066 Country is seeing how artists react to this area in different styles and media, and so the Burton Gallery's next show is a real treat.
It features the work of Margaret Marks (1899 -1990), a pupil of the Bauhaus school – the epicentre of German modernism in the 1920s and 1930s – who had to flee Germany when the Nazis came to power.
Marks settled in Britain, and in the 1950s made several trips to Hastings, where she produced a series of paintings and drawings inspired by the unique feel of the place.
The results are fascinating clashes between her recognisably Bauhaus approach and the quintessential seaside idyll she encountered here, and returning to their spiritual home the work has lost none of its verve and flair.
Also on display will be work from local artist John Lipsham, whose powerful paintings explore the tension between the representational and the abstract with startling results, and Andy Parker, who can often be seen on the seafront furiously capturing the ever-changing dynamic between light and dark, sky and water.
The Burton Gallery is at 5 Marine Court, St Leonards, open Friday to Monday 11am until 5pm. This show runs until June 9 and more information can be found at www.theburtongallery.co.uk.
