Disney delight from the Hastleons

Review: Beauty and the Beast

As with previous Hastleon shows, regular theatre goers have grown to expect big chorus numbers that enchant the audience with impressive choreography and lively displays.

Now it has stepped up a gear and everyone involved has made an impressive job bringing the townsfolk of the show to life.

As soon as the curtain goes up, they spring into action and the show flows with good pace. It will make even the most cynical of adults believe in the magic of what's going on.

Lucy Anderson as Belle brings an angelic sway to the fore while The Beast (Kenny Giles) gives a powerful performance as leading man.

The supporting characters who steal the show are worth the ticket price alone. Comedy duo Gaston and LeFou (Mehdi Hamed and Adam Smith) have a clever choreographed trickery which brings a touch of anarchy to the stage, and credit must go to Charlie Legg and Daniel Regelous who play Cogsworth and Lumiere with such vigour and gusto,

Alongside them you have the motherly teapot, Mrs Potts (Judy Welsh) who has got the voice and characterisation down to a 'tea' with her little son Chip the cup who, with a little bit of magic, is very cleverly revealed.

Lesley Davis as The Wardrobe is in fine operatic voice and Vanessa King plays The Feather Duster with a little bit of sauce.

This production is a massive undertaking for the Hastleons but it shows how high their standards can get when they flex their muscles.

The set is hugely impressive and gives more professionalism to the show than just cardboard scenery – there is even a full size automobile that will have you in stitches.

Beauty and The Beast has been professionally directed by Drew Baker who has had the vision to go one step further, even if it is blowing the budget.

It will no doubt enchant everyone young and old, so why not take the family down to the White Rock and enjoy this 'tale as old as time...'
